Rocking Bar Z
What is Rocking Bar Z?
When I began thinking about my personal brand, and the brand I wanted to name my company, it was not a large leap for me to decide to incorporate my family brand.
If you know me at all, you know that I am a Texan first, as you get to know me better, you learn of my upbringing on a Texas ranch and the impact this had on me as a human and a leader.
This is the brand my father, my grandfather, and my uncle placed onto their cattle in the Texas panhandle beginning in the 1960's.
I personally held the branding iron as a teenager as we worked our cattle.
It represents to me my father, who passed away in 2024 after over 90 years of living life as a serial entrepreneur and frankly the hardest working man I've ever known. It's his boots I've been trying to fill all of my life. So here it is, the name of my consulting business:
Rocking Bar Z!
FAQ: How Joe Don Zetzsche Helps Floral Leaders Navigate AI, Retail Transformation, and the Future of Our Industry
Who is Joe Don Zetzsche, and what makes his approach to the floral industry unique?
I’m Joe Don Zetzsche, a fifth-generation Texan: ranch-raised, faith-rooted, and blessed to have spent decades leading people, building businesses, and transforming retail floral. My journey began on a Panhandle ranch and continued through 35 years at H-E-B, where I eventually led Blooms by H-E-B and helped grow the floral business from $80 million to more than $400 million in annual sales.
What’s unique about my approach is simple:
I combine the grit and authenticity of a Texas rancher with the strategic mindset of a senior retail executive who has lived through, and led through, massive transformation; including COVID, supply chain upheaval, and now the explosive rise of AI, robotics, and automation.
My experience spans:
-
Store operations
-
Buying and merchandising
-
Regional leadership
-
Floral transformation and innovation
-
Nonprofit and industry leadership roles, including serving as Chairman of the Board of Directors for PMA (the only floral leader to do so), and current Vice-Chair for “That Flower Feeling” Board of Directors.
-
Advisory roles with top growers, breeders, suppliers, and digital floral companies
Today, through Rocking Bar Z, I help floral leaders across the U.S. and internationally prepare for the technological revolution reshaping our industry.
What does Joe Don specialize in helping companies achieve?
Most companies bring me in during a moment of change, or the moment before change hits them. I specialize in helping leaders:
-
Clarify strategic direction
-
Connect supply chain realities with retail expectations
-
Adopt AI, automation, and new technologies
-
Build the relationships and processes needed for growth
-
Develop teams who can thrive in an exponential world
-
Think bigger (often 10x bigger) than today’s constraints
I’m at my best when I’m working directly with CEOs, owners, and senior leadership teams. My strength is asking the right questions, surfacing opportunities leaders already sense, and giving them the confidence and frameworks to move boldly.
Because of my deep industry relationships, I’m also able to quickly connect companies with the right partners, (growers, breeders, suppliers, digital platforms, innovators), to accelerate momentum.
What kinds of companies does Joe Don work with?
I work with organizations across the entire floral value chain:
-
Tech-forward disruptors like Poppy Flowers
-
Global suppliers like burton + BURTON
-
Innovation leaders like Chrysal (Blue Ocean Strategy work)
-
Breeders like Deliflor who want stronger grower/retailer connectivity
-
Independent retailers seeking operational excellence
-
Mass retail partners looking to integrate AI and supply chain modernization
From Florida to California, Texas to Bogotá, Europe to Miami, I help floral organizations strengthen strategy, embrace technology, and prepare for what’s coming next.
What challenges do companies bring Joe Don in to solve?
Leaders usually call me when:
1. They’ve hit a growth ceiling and need a new path forward.
2. They want to adopt AI or automation but aren’t sure how.
3. They need alignment across people, processes, and purpose.
4. They’re ready for a bold, future-focused strategy and need a trusted partner to help lead it.
Because I’ve led at scale inside a complex organization like H-E-B, I understand both the operational realities and the leadership courage required to make big moves.
How does Joe Don work with companies? What does the process look like?
My consulting is intentionally hands-on and relational. That’s the Texan way: we walk the road together.
The process typically includes:
1. A deep discovery conversation
Where I learn your culture, your goals, your pain points.
2. A custom proposal with clear outcomes
No templates. No generic strategies. Only what your business truly needs.
3. A retainer-based partnership
This model gives you direct, ongoing access to my experience and strategic support, whether 1–2 hours a week or two days a week for intensive project-based engagements.
4. Continuous leadership advisory
Many clients often begin with a strategic sprint, then shift into long-term mentorship and executive advisory.
My goal is always clarity, confidence, and progress, not complexity.
What results can companies expect when working with Joe Don?
Clients consistently experience:
-
Clearer vision and stronger strategic direction
-
Greater team alignment and leadership confidence
-
Improved supply chain connectivity
-
Better relationships between growers, suppliers, and retail partners
-
Stronger adoption of new technologies, including AI
-
Momentum. Real movement in their business
And yes, I offer a performance guarantee. If a client ever feels my work is no longer delivering value, I refund the previous month. No one has ever asked.
Most stay with me long-term and together we build something better than what they first imagined.
How does Joe Don see AI reshaping the floral industry?
We are living through the most transformative moment since the Industrial Revolution, and floral will not be spared. In fact, floral is poised for massive disruption because it is:
-
Physical
-
Perishable
-
Visual
-
Fast-moving
-
Emotionally driven
AI and robotics will change:
-
Breeding
-
Growing and harvesting
-
Cold chain management
-
Forecasting and replenishment
-
E-commerce
-
Marketing
-
In-store design and customer experience
But here’s the beauty:
AI will free us to be more human.
More creative. More relational. More purpose-driven.
Companies that embrace this future will thrive. Those who freeze or hesitate will fall behind quickly.
What drives Joe Don’s leadership philosophy?
My leadership begins with:
-
Faith
-
Love for people
-
Service before self
-
Integrity, warmth, and hope
I believe great companies are built by great people, and great people thrive under leaders who encourage, challenge, and elevate them.
At its core, the floral industry is about beauty, connection, celebration, and comfort. These values shape every partnership I take on.
